Absolutely Appalling... and no I don't mean Jorge's dinner.

Before I go on my angry but brief tirade against the French, let me start off on a good note. Dinner at Jan's and Jorge's was delicious! You hear me Cat!! It rocked! Jorge made a delectable spread. There was pork with crispy skin (didn't have any of that, although I was teased mercilessly that deep down, I really wanted a piece of that pork... which I DIDN'T. I've been a non-carne eater for about 12 years and I promise that I don't miss the taste and the texture of meat. Mind you, I'm not one of those vegan/PETA bastards who touts the benefits of beer over milk... no, no, no. My vegetarianism is purely non-political. I'll carry a leather purse in a hot second (hot DAMN almighty, I wish I could afford some Louis Vuitton and some Hermes). Anyway, I digress. I just don't like the taste of meat. So back to the succulent menu. There was crispy skin pork Cat, Spanish rice (w/ and w/out meat). Hey Cat, the rice had capers, green olives, and all kinds of goodness in it. There was also some sort of vegetable casserole, and homemade dinner rolls. The wine flowed freely and the appetizers were battered plantains with some sort of seafood spread. Yuuum! Dessert was coffee and Tres Leche cake. It was so moist. Cat you would have loved it all. What'd you eat at the Walk for Hunger? Just curious. Anyway, now for the Appalling... Recently I read the following article Take your time... I'll wait while you read it... hmm la la la la la... hm hm... Finished? Now, on to my rant... My problem with this situation is this... Other countries in the west, particularly France and Italy, like to think that they don't have these sorts of issues in their country. Representatives at the UN sit on their soapboxes and they bash the United States. They condemn us all for the faulty decisions our current president has made and they criticize our foreign policies, notwithstanding their own corrupt leaders and policies- don't even get me started on Italy's PM Silvio Berlusconi or the fact that the French almost elected a racist, fascistic xenophobe as their president a couple of years back... Jean-Marie La Pen anyone? Granted, we have a complete moron for a president and our foreign policies aren't the best, but I cannot stand when other countries act as if the U.S. is a complete cesspool and that their countries are not replete with corruption, racism, crime, and pedophilia. Every Italian and or French person I've argued with will say how "Americans are horrible human beings" until I remind them about their own leaders (then they quickly stutter their way around the discussion before backing down. Then I remind them how quickly they run over here to attend university). When I read stories such as the aforementioned one, I can't help but think what a bunch of hypocrites the French and every other country in the E.U. can be. They're haughty and they think they are without faults. Need France be reminded of how they colonized Africa, an attempt at mission civilsatrice? Or their treatment of the Hottentot Venus, Sara Baartman? I can go on and on forever, but let this story be indicative of this reality: every country in the west has problems. I'm not trashing France, Europe, or any other country. My primary point is that noone's country is the blueprint for habiter civilisé, even though the political-powers-that- govern, would like to think so.
